Hot Wheels vs MINI GT vs INNO64: which 1:64 brand is best?
There is no single best brand. Hot Wheels mainline is the best for kids and budget fun, while MINI GT and INNO64 suit collectors who want true 1:64 scale, rubber tyres and fine detail.
The short version
Each brand does something well. The right choice depends on who the car is for and what you want from it. Here is a quick summary before we go into each one.
- Hot Wheels mainline: affordable, tough, playable, huge variety. Box scale and plastic wheels.
- Hot Wheels premium (such as Car Culture): metal bases, rubber tyres, better detail. A step up in price.
- MINI GT: true 1:64, rubber tyres, detailed, licensed real cars. A favourite with collectors.
- INNO64: true 1:64 with a strong JDM and touring car focus. Detailed and premium.
- Bburago: a well-known Italian name, affordable, with Ferrari licensing in its small-scale range.
- GreenLight: a US brand known for film and TV cars and Americana.
- CCA: an affordable brand of licensed road cars.
Hot Wheels: mainline and premium
Hot Wheels, made by Mattel, is the name most people know. The mainline cars are the ones you find on a blister card. They are cheap, sturdy and built to be played with, which makes them ideal for children and for anyone who likes hunting for a bargain.
Mainline cars are box scale, so sizes vary from car to car. Wheels are plastic and the paint and printing are simpler. Many castings are fantasy designs rather than real cars. That is part of the fun, but it is worth knowing.
The premium lines, such as Car Culture, are aimed at adults. They usually have metal bodies and bases, rubber Real Riders tyres and more detailed printing, and most are licensed real cars. They cost more than mainline, but they look far closer to a collector model. Mainline also hides rare Treasure Hunts, which our Treasure Hunt guide explains. See the full range on our Hot Wheels page.
MINI GT: true scale and rubber tyres
MINI GT has become one of the most popular collector brands at 1:64. The cars are made to true 1:64 scale, so they line up neatly on a shelf. They have rubber tyres, detailed lights and printed badges, and the range is made up of licensed real cars.
You will find everything from everyday road cars to race cars and modified builds. MINI GT costs more than a mainline Hot Wheels, so it is better suited to collectors than to rough play. For many people it is the brand that turns a casual interest into a proper collection. Browse the range on our MINI GT page.
INNO64: for JDM and touring car fans
INNO64 focuses heavily on Japanese cars and touring car racing, with famous liveries and tuned road cars. The models are true 1:64, detailed and sit at the premium end of the scale.
If you love Skylines, Civics and classic touring cars, INNO64 is worth a close look. It is a collector’s brand rather than a toy. Our JDM diecast guide and the INNO64 page are good places to start.
Bburago, GreenLight and CCA
Bburago is a long-standing Italian diecast name. It is known for being affordable, and its small-scale range includes Ferrari models under licence. It is a good, gentle way into Ferrari collecting without spending a lot.
GreenLight is an American brand known for cars from films and TV shows, police cars and classic Americana. If you want a car you remember from the screen, it is often the first place to look. See our movie and TV cars.
CCA makes affordable licensed road cars. It suits younger collectors and anyone who wants real cars at a friendly price, with simpler detail than the premium brands.
